MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

PROFESSOR SAWA YOSHIKI
HEAD OF DEPARTMENT FOR CARDIOVASCULAR
SURGERY, OSAKA GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

Osaka University Faculty of Medicine traces its roots to the Tekijuku academy founded in Osaka by Ogata Kōan in 1838. Since 1956, after performing the first successful open heart surgery with a heart-lung machine in Japan, the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery has been a front-runner in Japan. With that reputation to protect, we are committed to maintaining top-class surgical outcomes, while devoting our efforts to development and dissemination of new therapies for treatment of congenital hear disease, heart valve disease, coronary, aorta, peripheral vascular diseases, and so on.
Although the first heart transplant in Japan under the Organ Transplant Law is still a recent memory from 1999, we also introduced the implantable ventricular assist device (VAD) as soon as possible, at the clinical research stage. In terms of both heart transplants and VAD implants, we are proud to be one of the most experienced facilities in Japan
In terms of reducing the invasiveness of surgery, we also employ MICS techniques to reduce surgical injuries as much as possible. In 1993, the world began treating aortic aneurysm with stent grafts, and in 2009 we performed the first transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in Japan. We are now a leading facility for minimally invasive surgery.
We have also been deeply involved from the R&D stages in regenerative therapy for cardiovascular diseases. In 2015, autologous skeletal myoblast sheets known as “Heart Sheets” became the first cellular-or tissue-based cardiovascular disease treatment to be approved in Japan. Further, we are already moving forward on research into the use of iPSC-derived cardiomyocyte sheets.
No matter what complications the patient has, we have a system to utilize the strengths of both university and general hospitals to provide comprehensive medical care, by bringing together a heart team that combines circulatory medicine, other medical departments and paramedics.

In this way, the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery fulfills its mission of creating valuable new cardiovascular science. As well as minimally-invasive surgery, we are pioneering in areas such as organ transplant, ventricular assist devices, and regenerative treatment, so we can continue to deliver the latest and best medical care to our patients.
